I was feeling sad that I couldn't find a new artist that would catch my ears and give me that warm feeling inside. Was getting saturated with all the mainstream artists (some of them are good don't get me wrong!), but was longing for something new. That breath of fresh air. Not necessarily something unheard of but something different. I think I might have found it in Charlie Cunningham.
I love when a young artist plays what I like to call old songs. It's the unexpected factor that makes me happy. It makes him seem wise and the music deep. I believe that pop music doesn't have to be dumb or superficial. Bubble gum pop is no longer considered music by yours truly.
This is a perfect example of good pop music. I believe it was Theo Hutchcraft of Hurts that had said in an interview that pop music is like a coin with it's two sides: the good and the bad. Charlie Cunningham is definitely on the good side. Especially with his song "Lessleg", already my favorite.
His music is very stripped down. He seems bound by the rule of simplicity. A guitar, barely there drums and his voice. There is no need for anything else. The balance between melody, instrumentals and lyrics is perfect, and it's the kind of songs that lets itself be listened to. No efforts needed.
He reminds me a bit of Bright Eyes (with a much better voice) with a little Billy Lockett thrown into the mix. The perfect combination for the sweetest and most relaxing atmosphere. All I can say is sit back and enjoy with a glass of wine.
