However, as I often said before, that is NOT an easy task to do. There is a thin line between classic and cheesy, very thin in fact! Few are the bands that manage to pull it off, but I have, luckily, found of them.
Andrew Maley, founding member of the band was kind enough to answer a few of my questions...
1- How did the band got formed?
Well, that happened over period of years across different people via Fantasia, Energy+, The Answer and tech NOIR. Real Experts evolved from those bands but there were two of us that started, myself and David. We originally met at a camp over New Year's Eve when we were 12. But David, didn't really join the band until about 2 years later. It was really myself and a school friend that started it. The current guitarist used to be the singer years ago and our two vocalists now were found through my brother's wife and a gum-tree ad respectively!
2- Why this name?
One of our favorite films was "The Tall Guy" and in it there is a scene with a mad doctor trying to give Jeff Goldblum injections and he says "They say the real experts can do it without even looking". So the first album was originally called "Doing It Without Looking".
3-How does the creative process happen?
I've settled on a very effective routine now. Usually it starts with someone saying a word or phrase that I think would make a great song title. So, on my phone I have a running list of titles for new songs. And then across the next few days after that the melody of the chorus will start coming into my head randomly. So I have to make sure I remember them, quite often I will quickly record an audio clip when I get home of me singing whilst playing the piano to get it down as a point of reference. So by the time I start playing around with sounds and rhythms, I know what the style and tempo will be. And usually the verse lyrics start flowing from there. But quite often I will start a song, then scrap it if it's too boring, and keep the concept though and start again!
4- What would be your dream collaboration?
As much as the temptation is to say any of [the ones mentioned] above, I've always been excited about the idea of finding a obscure unknown artist that sounds and looks great and embodies the perfect pop ideal. But also I entertain myself by trying to find singers that have been featured on old songs and disappeared of the face of the Earth. I like the idea of bringing them back on one of our tracks.
5- What are you actually Experts in?
We call it the art of Hit-Churning. Starting with nothing and then within only a few hours having a potential smash hit song. Sometimes creating a song in my head can be a curse, because there just aren't enough hours in the day to get them all recorded, but ultimately that skill is probably a moment of real expertise each time...
