I love being one of the first to "discover" a brand new artist, but sometimes, turns out I am more than the last to do so. Sometimes, I arrive years too late and start talking about it as if the band had formed the day before. In fact, sometimes, some bands have already broken up! This is one case where they are still together but I've only JUST found out about them.
Releasing their first single in May 2012, the self described grunge band has performed a few times and went on to put out a few other songs, including my personal favorite "Where The Wild Things Grow" (listen to it here). It seems the most popular of their songs are "Y.O.U" and "I Come Undone", for obvious reasons. Both are pretty dark, but romantic tunes. You can have a listen to both, below.
Seems like Pixie Geldof, frontwoman of the band, is a fan of those dark yet innocent lyrics, a contrasting characteristic that she somehow manages not to sound like suicide soundtracks thanks to the sweet and soulful sounding melodies. She was, after all, heavily influenced by Courtney-Love-fronted band, Hole, especially the song that inspired the band's name, "Violet". Same atmosphere.
Another quality to this band is the unconventional, yet beautiful voice. I wouldn't classify it as one of the best voices in the world, but wouldn't have any other sing one of their song. The voice fits and vice-versa.
A perfect match. Period.
My only disappointment is that the band has remained to a relatively unknown level. Yes, they've performed at a few gigs, and yes, they were critically well received (let's be honest, what's not to love!?) but I was hoping for a huge contract and for them to become the new big alternative/grunge band of the decade. Is that too much to ask? They've kind of disappeared, with not enough songs, at least in my opinion, to remember them by. I want more!
But there is still hope, good music lovers! Because if her Instagram speak the truth, new music should be on the way; she has posted pictures of herself recently working on some music, which makes me really happy.
I hope this time around Violet will be here to stay. But whether they are or just flying by once again, they can count me as a fan. Late to the party, but who cares? I'm there.
