We've just published their song 'My Type' as Song Of The Day, and it's easy to see why. We were so enthralled by it that we just went ahead and delved a little deeper into Saint Motel. So let's get a little bit more information on a small band called Saint Motel....
Hailing from the City of Angels, Saint Motel consists of A/J Jackson (lead singer and guitars), Aaron Sharp (lead guitar), Dak (bass) and Greg Erwin (drums). It was (according to their Facebook page) on January 2009, so technically they are far from being a "new" band.
It's hard really to set them as a specific genre, they don't really stick to one. It all depends on the song. Sometimes it's a type of psychedelic dream pop like for 'Daydream/Wetdream/Nightmare' other times it's pure groove like 'Honest Feedback'. So you can never really tell. The only consistent vibe is the touch of funk and a bit of garage music that they never fail to incorporate. They seem to be inspired by the disco era since their "ForPlay" album years. Their album "Voyeur" (2012) is brilliant. I can't decide if I prefer 'Puzzle Pieces' or 'Daydream/Wetdream/Nightmare' best. The video for the first one is weird and might just leave you confused and a little seasick from all the camera moving but in the end, once you can get past the nausea, you'll be amused.
Saint Motel's music doesn't only make you want to dance, it make you happy. Genuinely happy. You know, want to smile and dance and have a good time? Well then, that is what it is: Saint Motel is a damn good time.
They have a way of sometimes, just changing the pace of the song right in the middle, which normally is a very tricky thing to do. If not done properly would give anyone a massive migraine on the spot, but they make it work. I don't know what kind of magic they use but it's a good kind.
With 'My Type' (which will officially be out in August 2014) they've just multiplied the brilliance factor x1000. I don't know if that creates pressure for them, but the next single after that will have to be truly extraordinary to top that one off. At the same time, this is one hell of a preview for the next album.
We can't wait to see what they have in store for us next.
