On our most recent quest for new talent, we've found something special. American band Clones of Clones is special because they have the ability to take us back to our youth, our debut as young music lovers back in the 90s'. Makes sense, since they describe themselves as “a slightly mutated test tube baby of your favorite rock bands.”. Puts a smile on our face honestly.
Hailing from Washington DC, Clones of Clones has won our hearts with one little song: "I Don't Need Your Love" (we are fans of the old "Take Care Of Yourself" too, especially because of the change of chords, but not as much).
It all started out with a collaboration between Nick Scialli and Ben Payes, that went on by adding Brian Abbott and Todd Evans and ended up creating a band whose set of skills are pretty much impressive. One way to describe the sound would be "big". They make big music. We mean the kind of songs that carries a lot of emotion, as any good pop/rock tune should.
Clones of Clones are quite experimental. As a band they move across the sound spectrum freely and it works for them. They know who they are, where they want to go and how to get there. The take the late 90s' early 00s' rock vibe and make it relevant today.
Their music has evolved since their "Neighborhoods EP" out more than a year ago. It seems to us, that they hadn't yet found their own sound and were still looking. You easily hear the influences, taken back to The Offspring, Fall Out Boy or Jimmy Eat World, to name a few.
But now with the aforementioned "I Don't Need Your Love", "Out Loud" and "The Battle Between" you have a clearer idea of who THEY are. You still get that sense of nostalgia but only slightly. With their latest songs they've taken a more modern route.
And it works so well for them.
