Yesterday (04 May 2014) was the last of the week long presentation of "Les Bosquets" at the David H. Koch theater at the Lincoln Center, a collaboration between visual art genius JR and musical genius Woodkid with the NYCB. You thought we didn't "do" ballet? Think again.
Regulars of this blog will recognize the latter, given that I have praised his work since I first heard of him last year. Earlier this year I was amazed and please to discover JR, a french street artist with a very particular and poetic style (see his work here).
So when I found out that the two of them were working together on a ballet piece I was already sure that the world was going to receive a little bit of Art Heaven. And I was right.
They've been working together all through winter to create a piece that has fans, spectators, critics and yours truly raving. And it's not really hard to see why. Every single detail has been thought of and worked to perfection. From choreography, to wardrobe, to tease videos, to snippets of music, the whole of the show was designed to put a tear in your eyes and beauty in your hearts. Too cheesy? I apologize, but it's true. The show is nothing short of extraordinary. (Have a look here)
Though the collaboration piece itself only lasts 8 minutes, you will not feel time going by as you will be in trance, hypnotized by the beauty of the show. Every single note puts you in the middle of the riots at Les Bosquets as the dancers, mixing classic ballet with modern street dancing, narrate the story with only their bodies. In a shorter, less poetic way of saying it, it is a masterpiece.
Merveilleux. Bravo.
