Another Sunday has ended and I really don't feel like going back to work tomorrow. I know I am not alone, not the only one in this situation. So what do I do? Simple. I put on my headphones and look for some music that could make me save me from this situation. Well Tame Impala heard my cries for help.
I had heard lots of good things about this Aussie band, but never got around to actually listen to them. I knew they were the ones to thank for "Feels Like We Only Go Backwards" (October 2012), another single from the previously mentioned album, that was recently covered by Say Lou Lou.
Tame Impala is not a new band, it's been around since 2007, but only released 2 studio albums Innerspeaker (May 2010) and Lonerism (October 2012). Both albums have been nominated for and won various awards such as the WAMI, Grammys, ARIA and the Rolling Stone Australian Awards, to name just a few. This year, Lonerism was nominated at the Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album. They've produced 2 live albums, one in 2010 and the other one in 2013, as well as 2 EPs (both in 2008). They've have music featured on HBO's hit series Entourage and Girls, commercials and movies. On top of all that, they were praised by most of the major music magazines, radio stations/DJs and music polls for both albums.
First word that comes to mind when you listen to this band is: Psychedelic. You feel high on the music alone. Especially with a song like "Be Above It" from Lonerism. Sometimes it sounds like a Beatles tune, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it feels like something you've never heard before, like some futuristic space-y laser battle and sometimes it feels like it's overplayed music. Basically it's indescribable, the good kind.
One thing about this band's music is that it effects all your senses; for example, if you keep your eyes closed, I guarantee you see colors. Colors everywhere, mixing up like a 60's hippy-trippy video and leaving you feeling all groovy to the sound of the drums and electric guitars. It almost seems as if every song has it's range of colours and sensations that they produce to affect you in a specific (enjoyable!) way. Even Kevin Parker's (lead vocals) voice will have you in a half dream state that feels reeeeaaallllyy good.
The band is currently on a new album that will, as Kevin Parker recently put it during an interview with TheVine, "...make 'Lonerism' look like amateur hour". It should ideally come out sometime this year, so I will be impatiently waiting for the new tunes. Meanwhile, if you want to decompress before facing the awful reality that are Monday mornings, I highly recommend you put on some of this groovy, groovy band's tracks or at least enjoy two of my favorites below.
