I had already mentioned Raleigh Ritchie a few months ago, in fact he was my FIRST new Discovery of the year. I don't mean to brag, but I've got a good ear. Anyways, now he's an established and one of the most promising (in my opinion!) artists in his category, and I hate to sound cheesy but I feel like a proud mum. All this recognition is well deserved.
With his new EP, "Black and Blue", out now since January, the name Raleigh Ritchie has made his way through underground clubs and small radio stations to the BBC Radio 1, with nothing less than the title of Track of the day for "Stronger Than Ever".
That is quite the turn out, I'd say. In a mere six months, he has taken over the waves, first with his amazing first single off the EP, "Bloodsport" and now with the even better "Stronger Than Ever". It was released about 5 months ago, but was kept hidden until fairly recently.
There is something about his whole persona, that just oozes strength. The way he sings, and the songs themselves are just another plus. You can hear in every little detail, how much work and passion has been put into each note and each word, and how it seems to come from deep, deep, DEEP down.
He reminds me of a more toned down Stromae, mainly because of what I like to call the "tunnel music": dark songs with a bright ending. One of his major plus, for me, is the wording of the emotions. It is more poetry than song lyrics and more emotions than I've felt in a long while when it comes to this type of music. This goes not only for "Black and Blue" but for for his first EP, "The Middle Child" as well. With singles like "Stay Inside", I now hate myself for being in the dark for so long, when amazing music like this were being made.
How can you not love it?
I chose these two videos, simply because they are my favorite. But don't get me wrong, every single one of his songs are brilliant, but the "Stronger Than Ever"'s video is just powerful. There is no other word for it. Powerful. And "Bloodsport", well the song is the one that made me discover this fantastic artist so it will always hold a place in my RnB/Soul loving heart.
Now enough reading, kick back and enjoy these two gems.
