These days, the UK is a gold mine when it comes to music. Exploding everywhere, British artists are at the top of almost all the charts, in almost every country. You would think that after such a boom in 2014, there’d be almost no more talent left, at least for the given year. But this never sleeping talent factory shows no signs of slowing down. One of the best examples of new, raw talent is the Ghanaian-born, London based KWABS.
Arriving onto the music scene only recently, KWABS is slowly taking over the radios and the fans. A notable aspect of his music is the power of the bass: it’s the first thing you hear and the last thing you remember. The synth keeps the sound alive and young without taking center stage or becoming overbearing. But, the single most impressive characteristic of this artist has got to be his voice. Some would just describe it as mature, but there is something more about it, something intimidating almost. It’s the intensity that makes the song, lyrics, melody and all, sound the most earnest. You can feel it coming from way down and keeping it real. His music is honest.
We were trying to find any similarities with a more establish or other artist that we might know, but aside from some faint resemblances with SOHN’s synth sound in songs like “Last Stand” (of course since it was produced by said SOHN), or reminders of Leon Else’s soulful vibe in, say, “Protocol” (in a slower tempo perhaps), KWABS does his own thing. It could be the mix between all those different points that makes him (what should be known) as ‘the new Kwabs’.
We had heard of him for a while now, but now we heard HIM and we don’t intend to ever go back. Here are two of our favorite songs from him. Kick back and relax. Let KWABS do what he does best.
