I'm a sucker for sad songs. Especially when I'm sad. I know it sounds counterintuitive but that's just the way I am. They help me cope with the sadness. And no band in my opinion has sadder songs than Irish band Kodaline. They only recently (2012) went by the name 'Kodaline', after being making music since 2005 as '21 Demands'.
On June 2013, they released their first studio album In A Perfect World, including the popular (and heartbreaking) "High Hopes"and "All I want" and (the more upbeat) "Love like this" and "Brand New Day"
I first discovered them with "High Hopes", by accident while streaming a radio show. I fell in love with the song the first time and decided I had to know more about them. I'm so happy I did. You can hear how much work has been put into writing this song. Such a track demands a lot of time and dedication and yet it's so beautifully simple that it's a little hard to believe.
This description is certainly not limited to only this song. Same goes for "Brand New Day" or any other song from the album; it's just who they are as a band, That seems to be their song writing M.O.: Beauty through simplicity. They don't seem to be looking to exaggerate emotions, they just let it flow naturally through the music. Other than the music itself, they are very harmonious, vocal wise, as a band. Each member's voice complements the others', so much so that I can honestly say that the acoustic versions are often better than the studio version.
Though only recent, they are steadily gaining popularity as they had their first US performances (good job on Jay Leno!) and are right currently in the middle of their UK Tour, with their next gig on the 8/11 at The Institute, Birmingham. I hope they keep getting bigger because they deserve it.
And good music is so rare these days.
