I always say that the music industry is working backwards, especially these days when talent-less, all-about-the-image, so-called artists are pushed over and over again on the radio and television and real talent is just put on a shelve, in the back gathering dust. I don't think it's fair while some people (I won't name names!) are world famous for their crappy music, true talent like Clare Maguire are being passed over. What is wrong with this world?
I first heard Maguire's music a couple of years ago, it was the song "The Last Dance" that caught me attention. Her voice was different, and it reminded me of the older generation of songstresses, the ones that are timeless, you know? Sometimes I hear Stevie Nicks, other times I hear Cher. Sometimes it's completely new.
You could hear the passion in her voice and in every single note. One more thing, her music has this quality that only good music has; the capacity to take you somewhere else, somewhere beautiful. (Whatever beautiful means to you). While listening, you have this image of very understated sexy: the kind of sexy that knee highs, messed up bed, sheer curtains, bed hair, and morning sunshine brings to mind. The natural sexy.
And it's no surprise that her music is so deep, given the sacrifices that she has made to create it. You almost can hear her sing about her life behind the heartbreaking sounds, the heart wrenching emotions even in the more upbeat songs. She has released so far only one studio album "Light After Dark" (February 2011) and two EP's, "Let's Begin" (2010) and "Clare Maguire" (2014), but it has been announced that sometime this year a new studio album will be coming out. The reviews to her most recent EP have all been generally positive, ranging from 7 to more on a scale of 10.
Though she has been absent when it comes to her own material, she has kept pretty busy collaborating with some of today rising artists, including: Chase & Status, BURNS and The Streets. Her voice might have added a certain soul to these tunes, but nothing as beautiful as her own songs. Some of her covers are as good (some better) as the original; Joni Mitchell's "The Last Time I Saw Richard" for example, or Aloe Blacc's "I Need A Dollar" which you wouldn't really picture her singing, but manages to be brilliant.
I know, this kind of music isn't for every one. But it's hard to not recognize the maturity and work behind every song she writes, whatever the genre of music you're into. I am actually pretty impatient to hear what she has in store for us in her upcoming album. If you don't believe me, take the time to listen to these two songs posted below and tell me this is not quality music.
I dare you.
