If you are one of the frequent visitors, you know that we recently interviewed Mancunian singer/songwriter Young War and that we loved getting to know this talented musician. We got him right before the release of his his latest work 'Trinity' and had him talking about the process of writing, his favorite artists and a bit about himself. With his EP out only today, we tought we'd christen this new section with a review of his newest tracks. SPOILER ALERT! They are fantastic.
Listening to this EP is just like listening to a romantic movie: there is a natural flow between 'scenes' (read tracks) and a certain emotion that makes the whole album extremely visual.
It starts with "Darker Love", a song that has hands down one of the sexiest/ most sensuous opening guitar riffs we've ever heard. The sexual feeling brought by the introduction is reinforced by not only the ambiance created by the bass and dark melody, but the lyrics as well. They just bring you straight to a bedroom, with an unmade bed and... well we think you get the picture.
The second track, "Eyes Closed" is an extension of "Darker Love", rhythmically and story wise. It took us back to "Black Diamond", obviously because of the addition of the Spanish sample into the song, although quite dark in it's feel, much less darker as the aforementioned. It's sad but very romantic. You feel the recurrent fear of getting hurt in the words and the struggle to maintain a certain level of hope, struggle that is translated via the melody.
The last side of the Trinity is (sort of) joyous note, well as joyous as Young War gets. It's the ideal ending to this trifecta. The story behind this song, to us, is after what seemed to be repeated casual encounters, the main character in this love affair has fallen in love and is only now starting to realize. You hear the surprise and underlying joy, in the notes which makes the track even sweeter. We were especially happy about this last one because we had already fallen in love with it, a few weeks back when the video had first come out, but to hear it as part of a whole, puts it on a whole new level, and makes it even better somehow.
So, my opinion of this album, and I will be brief in my conclusion, is:
Buy it. You need it. Now.
